This October, People Campaign for Down Syndrome Awareness Around the World
A US resolution named the month in 1984. Forty-two years on, the campaigns for it come from a few dozen local associations across four continents.

On September 28, 1984, the US Congress passed a joint resolution designating October to be National Down Syndrome Month, and eleven days later President Ronald Reagan signed the proclamation asking Americans to observe it. The resolution was introduced in the Senate by Richard Lugar of Indiana. Among the people in the Oval Office for the signing were the executive director and the president of the National Down Syndrome Congress, a parents' organisation. Families asked for the month before anybody granted it.
Forty-two years later, a support group in East Lancashire is running a campaign for it. So is an association in Portsmouth, and a parents' association in Jakarta, and a foundation started after a primary school told a mother it had never taught a child with Down syndrome.
Search Down Syndrome Awareness Month on Twibbonize and you will find a few dozen campaigns, most of them small yet still growing, each one started from scratch by a local group for the people it already knows. The East Lancashire Down's Syndrome Support Group published Down's Syndrome Awareness Month Oct 26 on the first of this month and holds 17 supporters. Portsmouth DSA's Celebrating Down Syndrome Awareness Month has been live since 2024 and holds 97. Yayasan Sahabat Sindroma Down Istimewa published Bulan Kesadaran Down Syndrome on October 6, captioned Celebrate differences. Embrace inclusion, and holds 23. SSDI was founded by Andi Nur Fitri Balasong after that school refused to enrol her child, and it now gathers children with intellectual disabilities and argues for the therapy and services their families are entitled to.
The largest October campaign on the platform comes from Yayasan POTADS in Jakarta, the Indonesian parents' association for children with Down syndrome, whose 2024 frame, End The Stereotypes, holds around 8,000 supporters. This year's POTADS Frame is launching as a collaboration with Twibbonize.
We spent a morning at POTADS's office in South Jakarta last month, and the useful thing we learned there was a distinction between the two campaigns POTADS makes each year. March, for World Down Syndrome Day, is for their children. October is for everyone else.
The Frame is not only a celebration, then. It is an address, and what it says is that people with Down syndrome are here and are full of potential. Which is why none of these campaigns arrives on its own.

Day 8 post for #31Facts for each day in October by DSUK via Facebook
Down Syndrome UK published its Frame, Proud to be supporting, on September 30 and holds 62 supporters. Around it the charity spends October posting #31Facts, one fact about Down syndrome for each day of the month, and gives away classroom packs for early years, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, so a teacher can run a lesson on stereotypes or friendship without having to build one.
POTADS works the same ground on Instagram, where the comments under their October posts are filled with parents celebrating their own children.
Portsmouth DSA has four things in its October diary: the Great South Run on the 17th and 18th, a pre-school training session for parents on the 22nd, and a Halloween party on the 23rd.
The Frames are the parts that travel, while the lesson plan, the walk, the training evening and the party reach the people who can show up in the area. A profile picture is how the area gets bigger.
Down Syndrome International set this year's theme as Together Against Loneliness, which names what exclusion costs people with Down syndrome and the families around them.
Put the two halves together and the month makes more sense. The Twibbon Frame is the space where people, in a way, show off. The supporters' faces held up in a feed, and the posts reached everyone.
The events are where people show up, at the run, the training evening, the party. Posting and never turning up is a gesture, and turning up and never posting keeps the room the same size every October.
Run together they are one invitation to everyone else. These organizers are the ones holding the thirty-one days open, and the thirty-one days are addressed to the rest of us.
