This Halloween, Give Your Supporters a Costume With Your Twibbons

Six Halloween campaigns, three different approaches to the Frame.

In October 2022, a student debate tournament at FPT University published a Halloween frame for its debate society's event. They took Munch's The Scream, washed the whole canvas in purple, and cut the screaming figure's head out of it. The tournament's mark sits small along the bottom edge. Upload a photo and your own face is the one doing the screaming.

Halloween is the one week when your supporters want their face used, not framed. The whole point of the night is being someone else for a few hours. A frame that sprinkles bats and cobwebs around the border is asking people to be themselves on the one day they signed up not to be.

Here are some tips you can apply to your Halloween Twibbon designs.

Cut the opening into a body

In October 2021, with Squid Game everywhere, an Indonesian creator published SQUID GAME UG: a flat pink field, a pale circle, and inside it a green tracksuit with 456 across the chest.

Three weeks later another creator published Squid Games Edisi Halloween, the pink guard's hooded jumpsuit with a hood-shaped opening where the mask should be. Neither carries a single word of text.

In both, the opening is not a hole in the middle of a decorated square. It is a head, sitting on shoulders, where a head goes. A supporter who drops a photo in does not get decorated. They get dressed.

On Halloween, draw the costume first and cut the window into it. It still has to be generous and clear the chin, but it is now part of the picture rather than a gap in it. Costume art that fills the canvas is close to a Background in spirit, though all six of these are Frames with the transparency shaped like a head.

Build the costume around the face

Look at what is doing the recognition work in those two Squid Game frames. No title treatment. No logo. No still from the show. One is a green tracksuit and a three-digit number. The other is a pink hood and a zipper. The Scream frame is a painting from 1893 that anybody is free to redraw. Take a look at Bucin maut Twibbon below.

It might not be a blatant Halloween campaign, but the design serves well for Halloween purposes.

Set the theme of your event with a Twibbon

Westview on 90s: Halloween is a roleplay community's take: a black and white 90s horror poster, "WESTVIEW HORROR STORY" across the top, two named characters in panels down the left, and an empty panel on the right under the vertical words STARRING BY. The opening is not in the middle at all. The supporter's photo is a little on the side, and it is a cast slot.

HALLOWEEN SPECIAL (GIRLS), run around a school event, pairing a supporter with an illustrated character instead, and TRICK OR TREAT in the corner. The school's hashtag sits in the bottom corner, about as small as type gets and still reads.

One of the most quirky ways to set the vibe on the event they organize is exhibited by Halloween Festi X: Hellwarming. They took the most recognized painting by Edvard Munch and turned it into a costume and canvas to promote their Halloween-themed debate tournament.

Campaign by FPTU DEBATE TOURNAMENT SEASON 3 - CSG

These three creators put the organization's mark in a corner, at corner size. With a Twibbon, you put supporters in a position where they take an active part in the event. And for others who see it, a Profile Frame is more intriguing than a one-time poster, and it travels with the person anywhere.

When in doubt, classic Halloween frame still works

Happy Halloween 2021 is the classic, and at 266 supporters it is the most joined of the six here. Purple night sky, cobweb in one corner, spiders on threads, a thick orange ring around the opening, and HALLOWEEN along the bottom with a jack o'lantern standing in for the "O".

Campaign by Galih Sulistio Pamungkas

That is a border, and it reads from across a room. It is the right design when the campaign is a greeting rather than a costume, and "Selamat Halloween" is a thing people want to post. Just know which one you are making.

One craft move there is worth stealing whatever you build. The pumpkin is not parked in a corner, it is doing a job inside a letter. A decoration in your design should carry information, otherwise there is no point for the element to be there.

Same night, same date to celebrate, and it's free for everyone. The frames worth copying are not always the best drawn ones, they are the ones that hand their supporters unique costumes to step into.
