The First 50 Supporters Are Manual. The Next 5,000 Aren't.

Your first 50 supporters have to be recruited by hand, one message at a time. Do that perfectly and the next 5,000 arrive without you.

Every 4 September, Indonesia celebrates National Customer Day. BRI made it personal, and more than 13,000 customers added the campaign to their profiles. They did not respond to an announcement. They responded to trusted people sharing a campaign that already looked alive.

That is what campaign seeding actually looks like when it works: slow, personal, and manual.

An empty gallery is a closed door

A supporters gallery with nine real faces in it converts. A gallery with zero faces does not. Seeding is how a campaign starts, the flywheel is how it grows. The most common way creators lose a good campaign is not skipping the seed, it is sending the wide message before the seed has landed. Five hundred people opening a link to an empty page leads to the same impression that nothing happens there.

Write the seed list before you publish

Ten to fifteen names, written down, before the campaign goes live. Reach out to your keenest people, the ones who reply to the group chat within the hour and post things because they liked them, not because they were asked. Make your own Twibbon first, so the gallery is never truly at zero when the first person arrives.

Send those fifteen one at a time

Send short but compelling direct messages, under 100 words each. Attach a screenshot of the Twibbon with a real face in it, because a bare link reads as spam and a face shows exactly what they get.

Ask them to use it, not to support it. "Please support our campaign" puts your organization in the subject position. "We made this one for you" puts them in it. The message that works is four lines: who it is for, what it is, the link, the image.

Wait two to four hours, then go wide

This gap is the whole trick. Two hours of manual sending buys you social proof for every message you send afterwards. When the full group message goes out, new people land on a page where people like them are already visible, and joining stops feeling like going first.

Follow up once, then change channels

At day three to five, send one follow-up with a fresh gallery screenshot rather than a number. After that, stop re-messaging the same people. When momentum stalls, the fix is a new channel, not a louder repeat.

The seed-list test

This tells you whether your campaign is ready for its real audience.

Write down 10 to 15 of your most enthusiastic people before you publish. Send the link to those names only, one message at a time. Two hours later, open your own campaign page the way a stranger would, from a phone, without logging in.

It passes if the gallery is filled with real faces. It fails if you are looking at an empty grid, or at one face, and that face is yours.
