Your Independence Day Twibbon can be so much more than a decoration, it can be a statement and a call to action

In December 2024, Kementerian PPPA (Indonesia's Ministry of Women Empowerment and Child Protection) published Peringatan Hari Ibu Ke-96 with a real slogan on it, Perempuan Menyapa Perempuan Berdaya Menuju Indonesia Emas 2045, "Women Welcome, Women Empowered for the Golden Indonesia 2045". This July the same ministry published Hari Anak Nasional 2026, Sayangi Anak, Lindungi dan Bangun Masa Depan, "Care for the Children, Protect and Build the Future". Ten thousand people have joined the second one.

Now open either gallery and read the captions. Every supporter posted the same line: Saya menunjukkan dukungan saya untuk kampanye ini, or "I support this campaign". The platform default. The ministry wrote the sentence, kept it on the frame, and sent ten thousand people out with nothing to say.

The date is the occasion, not the subject

Most creators reach for Twibbonize the way they reach for a banner vendor. There is an event or a national holiday, so there should be a frame. The date does the work of getting people to show up, and the design certifies that they did.

But one thing stands out from both campaigns above: a Twibbon is not the poster for your event. It is a visual campaign. Thus, it's your space to campaign for something.

A Twibbon that celebrates only the day mistakes the day for a statement. Rather, the day is merely an occasion for people to show up, not the thing they came to say.

Almost every country has one date when the whole feed turns quite patriotic and nobody needs persuading to join in. That may be an independence day, a founding day, or a republic day. In Indonesia it is August 17.

A statement of hope, or even a demand, makes this day more meaningful. It's no longer about how many years have passed since the important occasion. It becomes a rally. What you attach to that day is yours to decide. The anniversary is an occasion. What you want the next year of your country to look like is a subject.

Here are some campaigns that can be a source of your inspiration. As a disclaimer, none is tied to a holiday at all. However, they were all tied to an important occasion, and to a demand about it.

What a statement looks like

Theresa Marie Munsayac is an individual. In September 2025 she published HAKBANG: Silent Expression of Solidarity Against Corruption. Hakbang means step in Filipino. The name declares the act, names what it opposes, and tells you exactly what you are claiming if you join.

Campaign: HAKBANG: Silent Expression of Solidarity Against Corruption

Then look at 21 Tahun Front Mahasiswa Nasional. The campaign is the organization's own anniversary, garnering 358 supporters.

Campaign: 21 Tahun Front Mahasiswa Nasional

They could have made a birthday card. Instead they wrote the caption for their supporters:

Saya siap menyongsong Hari Lahir Front Mahasiswa Nasional dan Peringatan Gerakan Demokratis Mei 1998! Perbesar, Perkuat, dan Perluas FMN sebagai Organisasi Massa Mahasiswa Populis dan Modern, Pewaris Sejati Angkatan Reformasi!

Roughly translates to: "I am ready to celebrate the anniversary of the National Student Front (FMN) and the commemoration of the May 1998 Democratic Movement! Enlarge, strengthen, and expand the FMN as a populist and modern student mass organization, the true heir to the Reform Movement!"

Read the first two words. Saya siap. "I am ready". Among all the campaigns listed here, this is the only caption where the supporter is the one talking. The ministry campaigns have supporters saying saya mendukung kampanye ini, which says nothing about anything. HAKBANG takes a position in its name, then leaves its caption on the default too.

Write the caption for them

Supporters will not compose a paragraph on the spot. Almost all of them post whatever is already in the box, which means the box is yours to fill. These are four that you can adapt for the 81st Independence Day:

A hope, in first person.

Saya ingin Indonesia yang [X] di tahun ke-81 ini. Kalau kamu juga, ikut pasang di twb.nz/[slug]

"I wish for a [X] Indonesia in its 81st year. And if you wish the same, wear the Twibbon from twb.nz/[slug]"

A pledge.

Saya siap ambil bagian: [X]. 81 tahun merdeka, dan pekerjaan kita untuk mengawal kemerdekaan masih berlanjut.

"I'm ready to do my part: [X]. 81 years of independence, and our work to guard it still continues."

A statement with a call attached.

Berdaulat, adil, makmur seharusnya bukan cuma slogan. Saya ikut menuntut [X]. Gabung di twb.nz/[slug]

"Sovereign, just, and prosperous should not just be a slogan. I demand [X]. Join me at twb.nz/[slug]"

Belonging, for a school or organization.

Sebagai [your role] di [your organization], saya ikut merayakan 81 tahun Indonesia dengan [X].

"As a [your role] in [your organization], I celebrate the 81st year of Indonesian Independence with [X]."

Pro tip: Always use the "add custom field" option. A caption with a custom field in it allows every supporter to edit and make it personal. A finished paragraph gets pasted identically, which is not ideal for a campaign.

One frame, thousands of sentences

The official theme this year is Indonesia Berdaulat, Adil, dan Makmur, and the logo pack has been public since June 29. Use it for your campaign, though it may be worth remembering that it is the government's sentence.

Your Twibbon can celebrate the same date or use the same red-white combo as the others. But the one difference you can make is whether to make space for thousands to say an official slogan, or to say something from their own heart.
