The Red Cross Anniversary That Became a Student Parade

PMI issued an official HUT ke-81 Twibbon to every branch, and students turned a formal anniversary into a student parade.

On September 16, 2026, Official Palang Merah Indonesia Twibbon published a page titled HUT KE 81 PMI. The anniversary it was made for was the next day.

The supporter count is not in the hundreds or the thousands. As of this writing, 35,177 faces have filled the campaign's gallery.

PMI was founded a month after Indonesia's Proclamation of Independence, on September 17, 1945, by executive order of President Soekarno. That makes 2026 the 81st year.

The design decision worth noting is not the artwork. It is that the kit shipped down an existing chain. On the day the frame went up, PMI announced the official media kit on its Facebook page for every branch in Indonesia to use, and asked that the Chairman's greeting go out simultaneously the following morning. Branches were not asked to find a campaign. They were handed one, along with the date to use it.

"Please post the Chairman's greeting tomorrow, Thursday 17 September 2026" announcement by PMI via Facebook

Branches published their own anyway. Search "HUT PMI 81" on Twibbonize and at least twenty-seven more pages come back, from Humas PMI Kendal at 825 supporters down through PMI Kabupaten Lebak, PMI Provinsi Aceh and PMI Asahan. The same thing happened to the OneVoice27 initiative, a global church that set a theme and sent no artwork at all. Local pages appear whether or not the center supplies one.

But the official frame is where the crowd went, and the crowd is the story.

Search #HUT81PMI on Instagram or TikTok and hundreds of posts come back. A considerable number of them are not from branch offices. They are from PMR members, the Palang Merah Remaja, or the Junior Red Cross clubs in Indonesian schools. The anniversary reads less like a ceremony in their hands and more like a parade.

One post under the hashtag pairs the frame with a wish for the Red Cross to keep leading the humanitarian movement. The comments underneath it are where a form of mechanism shows.

Scroll the hashtag, and on the posts' comment sections the same two letters keep appearing: lb, short for "like back," meaning "I liked yours, please like mine."

Somehow, these students have boosted the flywheel of the campaign. A supporter posts the Frame, a friend who posted the same thing likes it and asks for a like in return, and both posts climb further into feeds full of other students who have not joined yet. The design did not do that. The reciprocity did.

It also means the campaign now serves double meaning. On the surface this is a celebration, and PMI ran it as one, with a date and a chairman's address. Underneath, what these school students actually claimed was membership, that they are part of the Red Cross society. Further observation also shows these students use the campaign to simply have fun.

Compare it to previous top-down types of campaigns by other institutions in Indonesia, such as Jakarta's 499th Birthday or the School Student Immunization Month. They pulled thousands of supporters but on social media, there remains an air of formality in the celebration.

It would be easy to read "lb" as empty traffic, students asking each other for engagement. That skeptical view loses sight of what matters for a campaign: a like-back exchange works in favor of the campaign's presence on the Internet.

These students are not trading attention over a commemorative graphic. They are trading it over membership in a Red Cross society, part of a humanitarian movement, which a teenager can genuinely be proud of.

That is one of the factors that make the flywheel turns here. Reciprocity supplies the push, and pride supplies the reason anyone bothers to push. Pride only comes when the cause is worth carrying it. That Twibbon and exchange of likes represent that the Red Cross matters for them.
