Pemprov DKI Jakarta Turns the City's 499th Birthday into a Visual Celebration

A deliberate campaign accompanying the city’s monumental birthday

On June 22, 2026, the official account of the Jakarta provincial government, @dkijakarta, posted on their Instagram with a caption “Jakarta 499, are you ready~ 💃🏻🕺🎉.” The photo features a twibbon that says Selamat Ulang Tahun ke-499 Jakarta, or Happy 499th Birthday Jakarta, with the official logo of the 499th birthday.

Three days later, the supporters gallery has already filled with 1,281 faces, and they are not all from Jakarta. One even comes from a halal kitchen in Jimbaran, Bali.

From a kingdom’s port to a megacity

Jakarta has not always been this way. The city dates back to the era of Sunda Kingdom when it was the main commercial port known as Sunda Kelapa. Then on June 22, 1527, forces under Fatahillah took the port of Sunda Kelapa and renamed it Jayakarta, meaning complete victory. This day was later established as the city’s birthday.

What followed was more than three centuries of colonial rule. In 1619 the Dutch intervened militarily at Jayakarta, destroyed the existing city, and built their own on the rubble, naming it Batavia. From there, the Dutch East India Company eventually governed an entire archipelago for more than three hundred years.

During the Japanese occupation in 1942, the city was renamed to Djakarta at first, and then Jakarta with the new Indonesian spelling. It was in Jakarta where Soekarno, the first President of Indonesia, proclaimed the nation’s independence from any colonizing powers in 1945.

Today, Jakarta is a megacity whose size rivals New York City. This is home to more than 10 million people, and a place of work for even more. A city that has been claimed and reclaimed, and has witnessed a tumultuous history, is now asking residents to add their own faces to a twibbon.

A visual celebration of half a millennium

This is by no means a new thing for the Jakarta provincial government, or as the locals say, Pemprov DKI Jakarta. For five years, Pemprov DKI Jakarta has consistently created visual campaigns commemorating the city’s birthday, and each year they introduce a new visual identity for the day.

If you go to their website, a small button that says “499 Jakarta Toward 5 Centuries” appears in the right corner of your screen. It leads to another page that provides all kinds of information about the festivities. At the top of a page, most remarkably, is a comprehensive visual guide, containing the official logo, the philosophy behind it, its versions in various formats, and how to place them.

The typography of the number 499 is inspired by the look of a time tunnel, a radiant spiral of various colors that represents time passage. This year’s celebration bears the theme of Jakarta closing an era, exactly one year before half a millennium. This philosophy fits Jakarta’s rich history.

No specific figures are attached. Just an abstract design with a slogan filled with meanings. Approaching five centuries is no small feat, and it stirs questions, imagination, and hope about the future. This is how the government conveys the enormity of this year’s June 22. With this “time tunnel” design, Pemprov DKI Jakarta makes a point that a new beginning awaits Jakarta, sparking excitement among the people.

Opening the access for the visual identity seems to be a smart move. Communities, companies, schools, and all kinds of individuals took the official logo and incorporated it into their own designs. Hundreds of new campaigns celebrating Jakarta’s 499th anniversary have been posted on Twibbonize just within this week.

A celebration for everyone

We have pointed out earlier how the supporters were not all residents, and we think this is where Pemprov DKI succeeds, because the access and twibbon make it possible for anyone to claim a feeling. Pride in Jakarta isn’t bound by your postal code.

This is a note for our creators who want to amplify an event like the anniversary of a city or community that is lived in by so many people: create a branding, release it for others, and watch your campaign being remixed and reproduced by many.

As for Jakarta’s 499th birthday, the celebration is not over. The city's birthday is a marketplace, concert ground, and a food hall all at once until the next month.

The twibbon is still live, and you can join over a thousand of people who have supported it.
