Buwan Ng Wika 2026: How a Campaign is Distributed through a Network

Language month is celebrated every August in the Philippines, and this is how an institution uses its network to amplify their cause

Every August, the Philippines celebrate Buwan Ng Wika, or "language month", to celebrate the history and promote the usage of Filipino as the country's official language. This year, the Commission on the Filipino Language, the authority that organizes the observance, aims to raise awareness of both language and the use of AI.

The annual observance has started since the administration of Fidel V. Ramos, the twelfth president of the Philippines in 1997. However, the idea of introducing a national language for all of the Philippines has taken its roots since the country gained full independence from the United States. A national language is deemed necessary by a country that consists of various ethnic groups and local languages. Filipino was therefore developed to be the lingua franca of this archipelagic region in Southeast Asia.

In recent years, around 2019, the annual observance shifted its focus from only promoting the language Filipino, into a celebration of all local languages spoken by indigenous Filipinos. Now the efforts have shifted to how the Philippines can combine AI and the Filipino language into a better future.

For such a complex dream, the Commission makes sure it reaches all of the elements of citizens by using their official media kit. Since mid-July posters, an official theme, and slogans have been prepared and distributed to the public.

In the poster, we see how the Commission works with other departments to amplify the campaign in bridging AI and Filipino into a development of more critical analysis. This includes the Department of Education which conveniently starts the wave of schools and universities announcing their own DP Blasts. What is interesting from this campaign is how a theme might have been dictated by an authority, but the institutions observing it have a space to be creative. Instead of one official Twibbon garnering support, there are various catered to each specific audience.

Many of these creators, either an individual or an organization, translate the use of AI into a drawing of robots, others even put on a literal logo of generative-AI services. It means their creativity is still contained within the idea that has been set by the Commission.

This campaign illustrates how an organization with significant authority might use their resources to amplify an important campaign. The Commission on the Filipino Language collaborated with related institutions in the government body, those within the arts and culture.

Though the method of distribution resembles the National Nutrition Month campaign: institutions first calling on their people. Schools observe the campaign on Facebook. We found plenty of posts that encourage students to use a frame that has been prepared, complete with the caption format.

Why is changing your profile to one with a frame is essential? Other than having a staying power, as opposed to a single social media post that will be forgotten within hours, a Twibbon also illustrates a statement, or a pledge. When you put on the frame, you're lending your face to a campaign. It represents your support and your wish for the campaign to succeed.

Another reason why a Twibbon works for a top-down campaign approach: you are not merely giving out posters, you are giving a chance for everyone to understand your cause and support it. In this case, the Commission might be the one dictating the theme, but how do they make people support it? A network of institutions and allowing people to create their own Twibbons is one of the ways. Through this approach, Buwan Ng Wika is not only an annual observance, it becomes an activity that people can also participate in.

This is one method you can use to kickstart a campaign within an organization with an established network.
