The Tourism and Hospitality Association in Lubao Takes September Wholeheartedly
One campus chapter in Pampanga answered this year's World Tourism Day theme with a profile frame and month-long celebration program

September 27 is World Tourism Day, and in the Philippines that date sits inside a month the country arranged around it on purpose. Proclamation No. 894, signed by President Fidel V. Ramos in 1996, moved National Tourism Week from the first week of May to the last week of September so it would land on World Tourism Day. Schools, campus organizations, and regional tourism offices have since stretched that week across all of September.
The theme this year is Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to redesign tourism, made official by UN Tourism members at their general assembly in Riyadh in November 2025, with El Salvador hosting the official celebration. The Riyadh Declaration spells out what redesigning means. Member states directed the Secretary-General to activate an AI Impact on Tourism report and recommendation guide, to build frameworks that assess each country's AI readiness, and to promote "responsible and safe adoption of AI in the sector," with data governance and privacy attached. States are also told to confront "uneven tourist distribution" by channeling flows "towards emerging destinations."
Redesigning tourism, stated plainly, means redesigning what gets recommended.
That is not an abstract question in a country where tourism carries this much of the economy. Tourism's direct contribution was 8.1 percent of GDP in 2025, down from 8.9 percent the year before, and the sector employed 7.70 million people, 15.7 percent of all Filipino jobs. Inbound spending fell 6.4 percent to 698.46 billion pesos while domestic spending grew 3.0 percent to 3.26 trillion, close to five times the inbound figure, and the Department of Tourism has since cut its 2026 international arrivals target to 6.7 million from 8.4 million. The core driver of Philippine tourism is Filipinos traveling in the Philippines, and that driver is growing thinly, three percent in a year the sector's overall footprint shrank.
Students and educators run most of that month. One campaign caught our eye. PLC World Tourism Month 2026 was created on September 1 by Alexzandra Nychole Baul for the Lubao chapter of the Junior Tourism and Hospitality Management Association of the Philippines (JTAHM-LC). PLC is Pampanga State University's Lubao Campus. On September 9 the page held 652 supporters.
The launch followed a format familiar on Philippine campuses. In a DP blast, everyone in an organization changes their display picture at the same agreed hour. The chapter's members did that at the start of the month, all of them wearing the same frame.
What the frame is doing, though, is advertising. Billed as the "Biggest Tourism Competition," the chapter's Tourism Month program runs on contests that test what tourism students actually train for. The 2025 edition included brochure making, tour package proposals, an art mural, and a global dance competition, alongside seminars and a color fun run. This year the chapter is still doing countdown to the program announcements, but they are back with eleven event organizers attached.
We do not know yet whether the events will answer the UN theme. However, the campaign page already does. The chapter's own release aims at unlocking "new possibilities through the fusion of technology, AI, and sustainability to redesign how the world connects, explores, and protects our planet."
Two patterns show up in how the chapter uses the page. The first is the collage, which means organizers gather every member wearing the frame into a grid and post it. This act converts scattered participation into a visible headcount. The second is the double duty. While a Nutrition Month or Language Month DP blasts mark a date and stops there, this one marks the month, markets a chapter, as well as an event calendar.

With the photo collage, JTAHM-LC shows their dedication, an identity signals of the team. While the Twibbon manages to mobilize them to promote and build the hype for their Tourism Month celebrations.
Six hundred and fifty-two supporters is not a national campaign, and a chapter in Lubao is not going to move an arrivals target of the Department of Tourism. But the frame shows where the faith of its advancement comes from. The month of September belongs to these students who have hope in the sector and work hard to celebrate tourism of the country.
