August is a Month of Independence Celebrations on Twibbonize

The 81st anniversary of Indonesian Independence lands in a month that Asian and African nations also claim as their own

On June 29, 2026, the Indonesian government released the official logo for the country's 81st Independence Day. Created by Fajar Novario, a graphic designer from Padang, the logo is built around the theme Indonesia Berdaulat, Adil dan Makmur, or Sovereign, Just, and Prosperous Indonesia.

Independence Day campaigns come close to half of everything Indonesian creators publish in August. Pulling from our internal data, 72,252 of the total 139,000+ campaigns published in Indonesia in August 2023, for example, were for August 17's celebrations, which is a 51.7% share. The following August it was 44,217 of over 92,000, or 47.7%, and in 2025 it was 38,027 of over 88,000, or 42.9%. The share has eased in each of the three years, but it has still not fallen under 40%.

This is happening this year too. Within weeks the logo had been pulled into campaigns all over Twibbonize, and a search for HUT RI 81 on the explore page now returns dozens of them.

Quite different from how the country's capital city celebrates their birthday, Independence Day is filled with personal accounts coming up with their own campaigns. Most people use the logo by the government, but so many express their creativity freely without following the style guidance nor the official slogan. This day truly belongs to everyone born and raised, or come to identify, as Indonesians.

Who publishes a campaign for August 17

SMPIT Ash-Shiddiq drew the national heroes and set the school motto in quotes along the bottom, making the Twibbon extra-encouraging for their own community to use. Town For Kids Preschool in Surabaya added their own cute mascot to this national celebration. A campaign for RT 01 in Dusun Banjaran, Magelang, uses wayang as the main decoration.

Earlier anniversaries produced the same spread. Bike to Work Indonesia, which campaigns for cycling as a commute rather than a hobby, set its own sixteen-year badge beside the national one and reached 3,489 supporters. Citilink built its frame as a photorealistic cabin window, so the supporter appears inside the porthole. Pelindo cut a circular window over a photograph of a container terminal, and the 3,739 people who joined filled the gallery with hard hats and cranes instead of headshots. Direktorat Jenderal Pajak went the other way with a Background rather than a frame, one giant white numeral on brick red and the photograph sitting behind the digits.

A single date can carry a campaign from a national tax authority and a campaign for one street of a few hundred houses, and both are official to the people who join them.

What happens on August 17

Government guidance asks for the flag to be flown throughout August. Streets, office buildings, and housing complexes take on a red and white decor, with umbul-umbul pennants along the roads, and repainted gapura archways at the entrances to neighbourhoods.

Upacara bendera, or flag-raising ceremony, is the central event, and it runs at schools, government offices, even villages nationwide. The most prominent one is held at the Presidential Palace, led by the President and televised live. The flag is raised there by the Paskibraka, a troop of high school students selected to represent every province. The ceremony begins in the morning, culminating in the reading of the Proclamation Text.

The rest of the day belongs to the neighbourhood competitions. The most common are panjat pinang, a climb up a greased pole for prizes tied at the top, balap karung, or sack racing, lomba makan kerupuk, in which the cracker hangs from a string and one has to eat it all as quickly as possible, and tarik tambang, tug of war. Cooking contests for the best nasi tumpeng are also common, along with parades with floats and marches.

August is a month of independence

Indonesia isn't alone in celebrating the month. Nine countries in Africa became independent from France in August 1960: Benin on August 1, Burkina Faso on August 5, Côte d'Ivoire on August 7, Chad on August 11, the Central African Republic on August 13, the Republic of the Congo on August 15, Gabon on August 17, and Senegal on August 20. That year, seventeen African countries gained independence that year, which is why it is also remembered as the Year of Africa.

So do the countries in the neighboring region: Pakistan marks August 14 and India marks August 15 as liberation from British colonial rule. Singapore's August 9 came from a separation rather than a decolonisation, since it left Malaysia in 1965, and Malaysia's own independence is August 31, 1957.

Indonesia's date works differently from most of those, since the Netherlands did not formally recognize Indonesian sovereignty until 1949. So, the anniversary marks a declaration rather than a handover of power.

What the galleries show

The generic frames collect the largest galleries, because anyone in the country can join one and search traffic keeps finding them. The specific frames collect far fewer faces, but the people might all belong to the same group. Community visitors, the ones who arrive because somebody they know shared a Twibbon, are more likely to join than those who come from search or news, and the pattern holds even as the exact numbers vary.

August 17 lasts a day, and the campaigns published for it will keep collecting supporters for as long as their links stay live. If you are still deciding what to publish, our collection of HUT RI 81 campaigns is a place to start, and our tips on captions will stop your supporters from all posting the same default sentence.
